Abstract IN taking a retrospective glance at the remarkable phenomena exhibited in photography, an endeavour will be made to explain them as far as possible by the light that may be thrown upon them by modern research, and at the same time to suggest extensions which probably may be given to this branch of science by further investigations.

It was done on film—we bought our first digital camera in A scintillator is something that takes light in the invisible spectrum and turns it to the visible spectrum. A lot of physics detectors use scintillating material to image particles that you can't normally see. She needed the photo to illustrate various types of wave-shifting scintillator. I wanted to add her to the photo because—it all goes back to my newspaper days—people make news, not things.

But the challenge gets tougher when you have to add a person to the picture. So I painted the scintillating plastic with the UV light in the dark and then had Anna come over and sit down at the stool. I had two flashes set up to light her. We have a lot of involvement in the Dark Energy Survey, [a collaboration to map galaxies and supernovae and to study dark energy and the expansion of the universe].

A second exposure followed by a second for the shutter to reset and then another second exposure. When you point a camera around the night sky and happen to get the North Star or Southern Cross—this is the Southern Cross—in the shot, you can see how the Earth rotates: This is what people refer to as star-trails.

We learned to use the brake lights to light the building. It gives some drama to the dome. You have to work with some very tight parameters and still come back with the shot. In Drift: Art and Dark Matter , pieces by four artists-in-residence dig deep into the underground laboratory. An art exhibit at the Science Gallery Dublin combines art and science to illuminate the invisible nature of dark matter. Just over 40 years ago, a new theory about the early universe provided a way to tackle multiple cosmological conundrums at once.

Enormous scientific collaborations are made up of hundreds upon thousands of individuals, each with their own story. Artist Shanthi Chandrasekar explains the mixture of art and physics in her new gallery exhibit at Fermilab. A composer has given new life to an amplifier used within a historically significant particle accelerator.

You could say walk towards the tree and it would cause the image to come into focus, or using our handy dandy formula we can calculate how much the lens needs to move to cause the camera to focus. Lets say you have a lens with a focal length of 10mm, and you want to take a photo of the tree that is one meter away mm using some simple algebra we can calculate that the lens needs to move only 10mm to focus on the tree.

Conversely, if you could not adjust the lens you would have to move back over a meter in length to cause the tree to come into focus. Light travels slower through different mediums like for example glass or whatever the lens is made of, sometimes plastic. When one side of a light ray hits the lens, part of it slows down and the ray bends. When one side of a light ray travels faster than the other, the light will bend towards the slower side.

The Convex Lens Cameras use convex lens to take real inverted images. This is because light rays always travels in a straight line, until a light ray hits a medium. The medium in this case is glass.
